Htilominlo Temple: The Htilominlo temple is close to the road between Bagan and Nyaung, and about 1.5 km northeast of Bagan. Htilominlo temple is known as the last Myanmar style temple built. This great temple was built by King Nantaungmya in 1218. The 46-meter-high temple, is similar in design to Sulamani Temple, there are four Buddhas on the lower and upper floors. Traces of ancient murals are still visible within this temple. Fragments of the original fine plaster carvings and glazed sandstone decorations have survived on the outside. The doors are fitted with beautifully sculpted reliefs. Several old horoscopes, painted to protect the building against damage are found on the walls of the temple.
It is said that the Htilominlo temple was built in the same place where the next king was selected by his father with a white umbrella as a selector. The Legend says that there were five princes all stood in a circle and the white umbrella in the middle. The next monarch would be the one the white umbrella is bent to.
This 46 meters high (151 feet) Buddhist temple has three shops, and was built using red brick that was similar in design to the previous Sulamani Pahto and Gawdawpalin temples, both built by Htilominlo’s father, the former king.
On top of the Htilominlo temple is a decorative tower, a Sikhara, similar to those on the Ananda temple, except that it is not gilded. The complex is surrounded by a wall and the inside, around the temple, you have a local market with lots of souvenir stalls selling handicrafts.
Unfortunately, many of the original decoration and the temple have been damaged after the last earthquake in 1975. But fragments of the original plaster woodcarving, glazed sandstone decorations and several ancient horoscopes, have been painted to protect the building against damage on the walls of the temple to resist time, nature and people. The temple is protected from further deterioration, by closing the terraces and the second floor and for this reason it is no longer possible for visitors to climb to the top.
